Lin Miaoke who lip-synched at the opening ceremony over the voice of Yang Peiyi [right] who was considered unsuited to the lead role because of her buck teeth

Chinese officials have admitted deceiving the public over another highlight of the Olympic opening ceremony: the picture-perfect schoolgirl who sang as the Chinese flag entered the stadium was performing to another girl’s voice.

The girl in the red dress with the pigtails, called Lin Miaoke, 9, and from a Beijing primary school, has become a national sensation since Friday night, giving interviews to all the most popular newspapers.

But the show’s musical designer felt forced to set the record straight. He gave an interview to Beijing radio saying the real singer was a seven-year-old girl who had won a gruelling competition to perform the anthem, a patriotic song called “Hymn to the Motherland”.

At the last moment a member of the Chinese politburo who was watching a rehearsal pronounced that the winner, a girl called Yang Peiyi, might have a perfect voice but was unsuited to the lead role because of her buck teeth.

So, on the night, while a pre-recording of Yang Peiyi singing was played, Lin Miaoke, who has already featured in television advertisements, was seen but not heard.

“This was a last-minute question, a choice we had to make,” the ceremony’s musical designer, Chen Qigang, said. “Our rehearsals had already been vetted several times – they were all very strict. When we had the dress rehearsals, there were spectators from various divisions, including above all a member of the politburo who gave us his verdict: we had to make the swap.”

Mr Chen’s interview gave an extraordinary insight into the control exercised over the ceremony by the Games’ political overseers, all to ensure the country was seen at its best.

Officials have already admitted that the pictures of giant firework footprints which marched across Beijing towards the stadium on Friday night were prerecorded, digitally enhanced and inserted into footage beamed across the world.

Mr Chen said the initial hopefuls to sing the anthem had been reduced to ten, and one, a ten-year-old, had originally been chosen for the quality of her voice. But she, too, had fallen by the wayside because she was not “cute” enough.

“We used her to sing in all the rehearsals,” Mr Chen said. “But in the end the director thought her image was not the most appropriate, because she was a little too old. Regrettably, we had to let her go.”

At that point Yang Peiyi stepped up to the plate.

“The main consideration was the national interest,” he said. “The child on the screen should be flawless in image, in her internal feelings, and in her expression. In the matter of her voice, Yang Peiyi was flawless, in the unanimous opinion of all the members of the team.”

That was until attention turned to Yang Peiyi’s teeth. Nevertheless, Mr Chen thought the end result a perfect compromise.

“We have a responsibility to face the audience of the whole country, and to be open with this explanation,” he said. “We should all understand it like this: it is a question of the national interest. It is a question of the image of our national music, our national culture.

“Especially at the entrance of our national flag, this is an extremely important, an extremely serious matter.

“So we made the choice. I think it is fair to both Lin Miaoke and Yang Peiyi – after all, we have a perfect voice, a perfect image and a perfect show, in our team’s view, all together.”

One question remains: why was Lin Miaoke allowed to give interviews in which she lapped up the praise for her singing. Mr Chen said she might not have known that the words she was singing could not be heard. She had, in fact, only known she was going to perform at all 15 minutes beforehand.

Yang Peiyi is said to have reacted well to the disappointment. “I am proud to have been chosen to sing at all,” she is reported to have said.

“Kalau tidak ada rotan, akar pun berguna”, that’s a malay proverb suitable for BN situation right now. For me the BN hasn’t got any good leader to represent them in Permatang Pauh and that’s the reason for them to nominate a ‘recycle candidate’. Datuk Ariff Shah is a good tactic to get at least a few good votes especially in Seberang Jaya area but this is parlementary seat, so the people will look on the bigger picture. My prediction still goes to DSAI. Go, go, Go, go DSAI…………………………….. be there in Parlimen on 29/8/08 when BN present next year budget..

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Aug 13 (Bernama) — Seberang Jaya Assemblyman Datuk Ariff Shah Omar Shah has been named as Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Permatang Pauh by-election on Aug 26.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who is BN deputy chairman and Umno deputy president, said that after considering various aspects including local and current factors, Ariff Shah, 52, was the best candidate to take on Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Najib made the announcement in front of over 3,000 BN supporters at Sunway Carnival Convention Centre here Wednesday night.

The by-election was called after PKR president Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail vacated the seat to make way for her husband Anwar to make a bid to return to Parliament.

The Election Commission (EC) has fixed Aug 16 for nominations.

Najib told reporters later that he was confident that Ariff Shah who has served the Seberang Jaya constituents well, would be able to do the same for all Permatang Pauh residents.

Ariff Shah was first elected Seberang Jaya Assemblyman in the 2004 general election when he defeated Dr Mansor Othman of PKR with a 4,464-vote majority. In the March 8 polls, he retained the seat for the second term after beating Ramli Bulat also of PKR by 533 votes.

When suggested to him that it was not a normal BN practice for its elected representative to serve as Member of Parliament and Assemblyman at the same time, Najib said nothing could prevent the coalition’s leadership from making the decision because it did not contravene the Federal Constitution and the opposition also did the same.

When asked whether Ariff Shah’s nomination would swing Chinese votes to BN, he said: “I am hoping to swing all votes”.

He was also confident that all BN components would work together to ensure the coalition’s success. “We are not looking at it from the aspect of election but we need to look at it in the aspect of BN’s strength in the long run,” he said.

Najib hoped all party leaders and members would give full support to Ariff Shah and his nomination did not mean it had affected the political future of others not selected.

“I also hope all the candidates not selected will give full support and work together in mobilising the party’s machinery to ensure BN’s victory in the by-election.

“During the campaign, don’t push aside the selected candidate although in our division we are not supporting him. Don’t look at him as the enemy,” he said.

Najib said Ariff Shah’s selection was also based on his success in retaining the Seberang Jaya seat in the last general election.

“We have to strive to achieve success and we should not entertain other considerations and we should not think who will become divisional chief and so on. Instead, think of the strategy to win the by-election.

Ariff Shah was born in Penang and attended primary and secondary education at Chinese schools in Perak, Terengganu and Kuala Lumpur.

He is also fluent in Mandarin and Hokkien.

Present at tonight’s function included Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Umno information chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib, Umno Youth head Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Puteri Umno chief Datuk Noraini Ahmad and state MCA chairman Datuk Liow Tiong Lai.

A Single mother who battled breast cancer has won £2.5m on the lottery a year after her diagnosis. However Tracy Foster said that she would rather have kept her health than won the money.

The 40-year-old said: “You can’t put a price on your health. You can’t pay not to have cancer. I’d much rather have not got ill and not got the money but it looks like my luck is changing now.

“Being diagnosed with cancer was quite a shock in itself but that’s not as hard as dealing with the treatment.

“The last year has probably been the worst of my life but this year could be the best.

“I always said every cloud has a silver lining and that something good comes out of something bad. This proves it.

“It’s all very overwhelming.”

The divorced mother of two won a total of £2,561,513 in the July 30 draw with her regular numbers 4, 26, 28, 32, 44 and 46.

She said: “I was at home on the phone to my friend while checking the Lotto numbers on the internet when I realised I had matched five numbers. I dashed round to her house in my dressing gown. I then called my mum who was staying with my aunts. None of them believed me.

“My aunt checked on the internet and told me I had won over £2.5 million. I was gobsmacked and still am.”

Ms Foster, from Benfleet, Essex, was diagnosed with breast cancer in February last year and underwent successful surgery to remove a lump. She has a scan scheduled later this week to check that she is still clear of the illness.

She said she was happy with the NHS treatment she received and had no plans to seek private care.

The self-employed catalogue distributor lives in a three-bed semi-detached house with her sons, Ross, 20, and Ryan, 16, said she was hoping to buy a new home, with “four or five bedrooms”. She is also looking forward to a luxury December break in New York and to buying a new car.

She said her sons had drawn up a wish list, with items including laptops, iPods and a Wii games console.

But she added: “They won’t get everything because I want them to understand the value of money.”

The millionaire who has treated herself to £1,000 worth of new clothes has been playing the Lottery since 1994.

She said: “A few weeks ago I jokingly said to my Mum I was going to win the lottery, but didn’t think it would actually come true.”
