(2:00pm) Anwar arrives at Mohd Nizar’s house. He is expected to hold a press conference together the menteri besar and Penang CM Lim Guan Eng at 3pm.

(1.32pm) PKR source says that the sultan had asked Mohd Nizar to step down as menteri besar to allow a smooth transistion of power at their brief meeting today but the latter had refused to do so.

(1.30pm) Najib just ended his Perak Umno meeting and left the party’s state headquarters without calling a press conference. It is learnt there was a discussion on who to be appointed as new menteri besar. 

(1.25pm) Najib is still at the Umno meeting. However, it is learnt that he will not be holding a press conference after the meeting.

(11:56am) Najib told reporters that he has informed Sultan Azlan Shah that Barisan has the majority to form the Perak state government. He said the Ruler will announce his decision soon.

(11:55am) Perak speaker V. Sivakumar has just left the High Court after applying to the court to declare the resignation letters of the three assembymen as valid and, therefore, their seats vacant.

(11:50am) PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be at Perak Mentri Besar’s office at 3pm and a mammoth gathering is planned for 7pm at the MB’s residence.

(11:38am) Perak Mentri Besar Nizar told reporters in Bagan Serai that he has just been summoned to Istana Kinta.

(11:34am) Najib has left Istana Kinta with the four assemblymen.

(11:21am) Najib returned to Istana Kinta, this time with four former Pakatan Rakyat elected representatives Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi (Behrang),Mohd Osman Jailu (Changkat Jering), Jelapang Hee Yit Foong (Jelapang) and Datuk Nasaruddin Hashim (Bota) to meet the Sultan of Perak.

(10:35am) Perak Umno state chief Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his deputy Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi leave Istana Kinta. Najib is expected to chair the state liaison committee meeting to discuss the Barisan candidate for the Perak Mentri Besar’s post.

(9:50am) Deputy Prime Minister and Perak Umno chief Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and state Umno deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (Bagan Datoh MP) enter Istana Kinta to seek Sultan Azlan Shah’s consent for Barisan to form the new Perak government.

(9:00am) Speaker V. Sivakumar told reporters that he will ask the High Court on Thursday to declare as valid the undated letters of resignation by the three Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen – PKR’s Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi (Behrang) and Mohd Osman Jailu (Changkat Jering) and DAP’s Hee Yit Foong (Jelapang) – who resigned from their respective parties to become Independents who have pledged to support Barisan Nasional.

Ketua bahagian PKR Ipoh Barat, Fauzi Muda mendakwa bahawa Timbalan Presiden Umno, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak telah mencuba tahun lalu untuk memujuknya supaya melobi dua ahli dewan undangan negeri (Adun) Pakatan Rakyat) di Perak supaya melompat parti. Fauzi mendakwa, beliau telah ditawar sejumlah RM50 juta bagi perkhidmatannya itu dan untuk membayar mereka yang berjaya dipujuk melompat parti. Bagaimanapun, katanya, beliau tidak membuat apa-apa tindakan untuk memenuhi hasrat Najib itu.

Walaupun mengakui beliau tidak mempunyai bukti yang konkrit untuk menyokong dakwaannya itu, tetapi Fauzi sebaliknya mencabar Najib – yang juga timbalan perdana menteri – menafikan dakwaannya itu.
Ketika membaca akuan bersumpah setebal tiga muka surat itu dalam satu sidang akhbar di Ipoh pagi ini, Fauzi berkata, seorang kawannya, Sulaimen Mansor – seorang ahli biasa Umno – telah menjemputnya ke Kuala Lumpur atas urusan perniagaan pada 11 Mac 2008.

Tarikh itu merupakan tiga hari selepas pilihanraya umum yang menyaksikan Barisan Nasional kalah di Perak dan gabungan Pakatan menubuhkan kerajaan negeri, dengan majoriti tipis lima kerusi. Bagaimanapun, Suleiman membawa Fauzi menemui tiga lelaki “termasuk timbalan menteri pertahanan, Datuk Zainal Abidin di plaza tol Jalan Duta.

“Selepas itu, saya dibawa bertemu (Datuk Seri) Najib Razak di kediamannya di Putrajaya di mana beliau cuba memujuk saya supaya melobi bagi mendapatkan dua Adun PR melompat menyertai BN,” dakwa Fauzi.

PAS candidate Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut won the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat, defeating Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh by 2,631 votes. Mohd Abdul Wahid garnered 32,883 votes while Wan Ahmad Farid had 30,252 votes.Independent candidate Azharudin Mamat had 193 votes and lost his deposit. With this win, the Opposition now has 82 seats in the Dewan Rakyat, of which belong to PAS.

Barisan, which held the seat before the previous MP Datuk Razali Ismail died last month triggering the by-election, now has 137 seats. There are also three Independent MPs. The results were announced by returning officer Wan Mustafa Wan Hassan at 9.30pm at Stadium Negeri which was the tallying centre yesterday.

The first ballot box was brought to the tallying centre at 6.30pm and the first result was announced 30 minutes later. Results were then announced stream by stream and Wan Farid initially led until at 8.20pm when the 81st box was announced. Mohd Abdul Wahid then led till the final result was announced.

The atmosphere in and around Stadium Negeri was calm. There were shouts of Allahuakbar  when Mohd Abdul Wahid was declared the winner. There were 143 voting streams in 36 polling stations in the constituency. A total of 63,993 of the 80,229 registered voters cast their votes. The constituency has 1,302 postal voters.

 

 

Finally.. the race is begin. Two pure politicians and one surplus racing to be KT MP by the 17th January 2009. 

It will be a three-cornered fight for the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat with three candidates having filed their papers on nomination day this morning. They are Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, PAS candidate Mohd Wahid Endut and independent Azharudin Mamat alias Adam, a 46-year-old businessman. Returning officer Datuk Mat Razali Kassim confirmed the three-cornered fight at about 11.30am. There were four objections but none were accepted. Ballots will be cast on Jan 17.

Wan Ahmad Farid, the former Deputy Home Minister, arrived at the nomination centre at the State Stadium here at about 8.50am, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Terengganu Mentri Besar Ahmad Said, MCA president Ong Tee Keat, Gerakan chief Dr Koh Tsu Koon, MIC’s S. Subramaniam and other Barisan leaders.

PAS’  Mohd Wahid arrived about 10mins later accompanied by party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and other Pakatan Rakyat leaders. Independent candidate Isma Airfath was expected to file his papers but did not turn up, although another independent Azharuddin decided to. The latter arrived at about 9.30am, but left not soon after. He was heard muttering that he could not file his nomination papers and was seen asking for the whereabouts of his sponsor and seconder. He was then seen re-entering the nomination hall about 10mins later and finally filed his papers. Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia (Akim) vice-president Harun Moahamad arrived at about 9.20am, but pulled out to make way for the PAS candidate.

There are 80,229 voters in the constituency, of whom 2,036 are postal voters.The nomination process started at 9am and closed at 10am. The returning officer is expected to make an official announcement on the candidates by noon.The by-election is being held following the sudden death of Barisan’s Datuk Razali Ismail on Nov 28. The atmosphere at the nomination centre was relatively calm as only the candidates, their proposers and seconders and a group of not more than 150 supporters were allowed in. 

 

Four term Wakaf Mempelam assemblyman and state PAS treasurer  Mohd Abdul Wahid Endot has been chosen by the party take on Barisan Nasional heavyweight Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh in the Kuala Terengganu by-election on Jan 17. Abdul Hadi, who made the announcement at the packed Stadium Negeri in Batu Burok here, said it had been difficult to choose the PAS candidate, saying: “All of the ones we had in mind were highly capable people.”

In the end, he said, he made up his mind after adhering to the “Islamic methods”. Thousands of PAS supporters, gathered at the stadium, broke into thunderous cheers when the announcement was made. Party stalwarts, and leaders from DAP and PKR also attended the event.

Mohd Abdul Wahid, 52, is a four-term assemblyman, Kuala Terengganu PAS chief and state PAS treasurer. He is a Fisheries and Marine Science graduate from the Universiti Putra Malaysia. His name had not even been on political observers’ list speculating about who would be the PAS candidate to face Wan Ahmad in the by-election.

Several names had come up including Batu Burok state assemblyman Dr Syed Azman Ahmad Nawawi, who is also the former Kuala Terengganu MP. Others were state PAS commissioner Datuk Mustafa Ali and his deputy Datuk Wan Muttalib Wan Embong. It is learnt that some 72 PAS members had been tasked with obtaining feedback from the grassroots on whom they felt was the most appropriate candidate. Views had also been sought from non-Malay voters.
